I was hesitant heading into Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I loved the first one.. (own the transforming DVD case and a 2nd gen Optimus toy) though Revenge of the Fallen made me realize you could actually get bored by explosions. Looks like Mr Bay learned from his mistakes.
Bay took what worked from the first (humor, characters) and second (the crazy action pieces) and mashed them together with a bit of 60′s space race conspiracy. He gets a generally awesome movie which still suffers a little from action overload, the running time, and a sense of humor that is a touch crazed at times.
It’s doesn’t feel like its worth seriously critiquing a film like this, but the pacing felt off at times, it tended to get a little unbalanced with the LOL scenes and emotional heartstring ones being thrown at you in amongst everything else. Also in scenes you were meant to care, I’d been so desensitized by the constant barrage of explosions it was hard to connect with some of the characters.
The Wins in this movie outweigh the fails, I’ll def be seeing it again, hopefully in digital 3D. There are epic epic epic scenes involving wingsuits, modified spaceships, Cybertron, Chicago, Leonard Nimoy and a great space race celeb cameo. In fact the wingsuits are so kickass I’ve wasted a decent amount of time today on youtube checking out the RedBull air force. FILMGUIDE rating: Reviewed by: Asher
