Fair warning, I Am Number Four is aimed squarely at the teen market, so if you’re looking for a mature action flick, move along quickly. As for me, I have three tween/teen girls, so this happened to be ‘essential’ viewing, though I’m not sure if it was the story-line or young British hottie Alex Pettyfer (who plays the lead role of John Smith) that made it essential.
The storyline is pretty hom-hum and predictable. John Smith is of course an alien from outer space (who looks surprisingly human) who has come to earth, one of the last of his species, to hide from a much hastier (and less human looking) alien race that seeks to destroy them. Smith is (obviously) number four, and we soon find out that he is next on the hit list.
So with his protector, he goes to hide out in small town America (Huntly, New Zealand might have been a better hiding place) where he tries to blend in by offending the high school jocks, befriending the nerd (whose missing father was fixated on UFO’s and aliens) and falling in love with the quirky but smoking hot artsy girl, who just happens to be the ex of the head jock.
The bad guys turn up and we have a battle royal, and it’s really no spoiler to tell you that the good guys win.
Essentially there is nothing wrong with I Am Number Four, It ticks all the boxes for a teen film, but as I hinted at the beginning of this review, if you’re looking for something that has any degree of substance, or at least the ability to inch you closer and closer to the edge of your seats, leave I Am Number Four to the teens and look for something else.
