Mythbusters is a show that I’ve pretty much stayed away from since I first discovered it. On the surface it sounded like it was just two opinionated guys, debunking all the cool urban legends and myths, in a kind of told-you-so way. Not only did it sound like it would be a boring concept, but also a frustrating experience as you would have to endure two guys lacking in social skills taking all the fun out of modern mythology.
As it turns out, I was totally wrong.
Mythbusters does star two guys, and whilst Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage do have their own opinions, they are certainly not pompously opinionated idiots. Rather they are a duo of crazy, explosion loving idiots.
But Mythbusters is more that these two strange guys with funny facial hair and an unhealthy interest in pyrotechnics, the show has a sort of B-Team that handles half the action in each episode.
The B-Team consists of the insane Tory Belleci, delightful Kari Byron and robotics nut Grant Imahara.
Together these teams tackle a number of urban legends each episode, ranging from the long-standing conspiracy theories such as the Moon Landing, to the more recent viral YouTube videos – mostly involving fire or explosions.
Rather than bore the audience with academic reasoning, the boys and girl take it on themselves to recreate as best they can, the situations laid out by these legends, and try to recreate them, proving for once and for all if they are real or fake.
It’s a surprisingly entertaining show, that occasionally has the odd element that you can apply to real life. The range of differing personalities with the common goal of performing crazy stunts to help ‘solve’ urban legends makes Mythbusters essential viewing. FILMGUIDE rating: Reviewed by: Jonathan Read
