I’ll admit, it was a little weird jumping into LA Ink – Collection 10. I’d fallen in love with LA Ink after getting the full first season on DVD a couple of months back. But Collection 10 is a whole different ball game. Rather than being a whole season, it’s seven episodes from season 4. And that’s quite a jump to make from the end of season one.
The crew is totally different, and is now totally male-centric – with the obvious exception of show star Kat Von D. The light and enjoyable atmosphere from season one is gone, and so has some of the focus on tattoos. Kat Von D – who was never the most down to earth person – seems to have turned into a massive dram queen, and if I’m being frankly honest, a bit of a self absorbed bitch. She was of course all of these things in season one, but back then she seemed to have control over these less than savoury character traits.
The saving grace then, is two fold. For one, the uber talented Corey Miller is still there, though his work never gets enough screen time, and Kat has a male friend staying with her who tends to follow her around quite a bit, comedian Rooftop. This of course doesn’t sit that comfortably with Kat’s new boyfriend, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx.
Being a comedian Rooftop helps keep the tone light, but can do nothing for the show when Kat and her apparent ‘rock’ Corey Miller have a falling out and Miller walks out.
Whilst LA Ink has lost some of it’s season one appeal, it’s still a great look at some of the most talented tattoo artists in America today, even if you have to endure the America Soap Opera that is Kat Von D’s overly dramatic life.
I’ll certainly be checking out collecting 11 when it releases on DVD to see how Corey is doing outside of Kat Von D’s High Voltage shop. FILMGUIDE rating: Reviewed by: Jonathan
