Age of Heroes is more than just another World War II film, it’s a historical look at the formation of Ian Flemming’s (yes, the dude who went on to author James Bond) 30 Commando, the inspiration for today’s British SAS.
Of course, Flemming only takes a small part in this film lead by the always welcome Sean Bean. It’s a film that focuses on the first group of men, chosen and trained for a mission in Nazi held Norway.
The Film kicks off in the middle of the action and confusion that was the British rout from France and the imprisoning of a couple of key characters for insubordination.
But they are not left to languish in military prison for long and they are soon in the Scottish Highlands training with the rest of the team that would be sent to Norway.
Once in Norway, things – as they usually do – turned to custard by the training of the men holds fast and the men pull together to attempt to get their mission done.
Age of Heroes is no high budget Hollywood set action piece. It’s a return to those classic British movies from time before political correctness told us that we were bad for going to war. There’s no moral tales, no real good guys and bad guys – well, there is one particularly bad German officer – it’s just two opposing forces trying to do their jobs.
The film is a cross between historical drama and action film, with a real air of authenticity and a plot structure that allows you to believe that everything you see is based on absolute reality.
It’s a refreshing take on the war films of recent and well worth an evening of your time. FILMGUIDE rating: Reviewed by: Jonathan Read
